Fussy Cutting vs Die Cutting. (Do I really need the dies?!)

Okay, so I know a lot of us, including me in the beginning, never liked fussy cutting but at the same time know that coordinating dies are sooooo expensive. Well I have come up with a personal solution to figure out if I need dies or not for a project or to coordinate with a stamp set.

Whenever I decide to get a set of dies I look at my stamp set and see whether or not its really intricate or just too intricate to fussy cut.

A few questions I ask myself:
1. Is it easy to fussy cut?
2. Is it too intricate to fussy cut?
3. Do I want the white boarder around the image or do I want it to be cut to the black line?
4. Are there fine lines in the image that if I fussy cut it will it get ruined?
5. Is it in my budget? I know us crafters hate budgets but we just cant buy everything even though we want to.
6. Do I really need it?!

Most of us (or all of us) crafty fanatics want the matching die to all of our stamps. I’m slowly collecting the coordinating dies but unless ita a super intricate image to cut out, I’m not going to get them together. I’ll just get the stamps.

The types of dies I would get my hands on.
1. Branches/thin flower stems
2. Dies that don’t have stamp sets
3. Fancy word
4. Basic shapes/stackable/layering dies
5. Floral dies (because I love flowers)

Those types of dies are basically the types of dies I like to get.

Just a quick note: I’m going through my stash and I’m giving away a bunch of dies. Plus I’m bringing in a lot more supplies and machines so I’m in need of space, so stay tuned for a give away. Don’t forget to follow my blog to stay updated.

Card 7 Masking, Copic Coloring + Video – Let’s Make Cards

I’m changing up the way Im labeling my videos. I’m going to start labeling them with the techniques used and the featured stamp set (if I’m featuring them).

Watch my Masking, Copic Coloring video here.

For Card 7, I did some masking and copic coloring. Altenew’s stamps are amazing. I love the thin and crisp lines that their stamps produce. Its pretty awesome! I love Altenew stamps and I wish I could own them all. I’m definitely getting my hands on all of them to own their entire collection.

I did a tip to tip technique with my copic markers because I only have a super small set of markers.

For the Magnolias I used: E000, E93, R32, I did a tip to tip with E000 and R32 and a nice gradient Rose color to a loght peach color.

For the pollen/center of flower: Y21, Y26

For the stem I used : G07, G28

In this card, I used the Magnolias for Her and Many Thanks stamp set from Altenew and the Woodgrain background stamp from Hero Arts.
Woodgrain is one of my favorite designs and I want try out other woodgrain stamps. A definite must have!

I was inspired to create this card when I watched Kristina Werner’s video on masking. Click here to watch her Floral Card – Make a Card Monday #271 Visit her blog here.

Card 6 Glitter Stenciling + Video – Let’s Make Cards

I love glitter because its sparkley but I don’t like all the mess that glitter leaves behind.

I used a stencil from Crafters Companion and I didn’t really like how the stencil looked and didn’t know how it would lool but I like how it turned out. Im also using superfine glitter from Elizabeth Craft and I absolutely love their glitter and Glitter Ritz but I chose EC to use this time.

This die is from Ellen Hutson and its pretty unique. Its awesome!! I didn’t realize it but I’ve been making a bunch of cards but it doesn’t involve a lot of stamping. I just used a stencil to make the background using some double still adhesive from EC.

Card 5 Foiling using Sticker Maker and Die Cut Inlay + Video – Let’s Make Cards

I’m still getting use to playing with foil but I like how this card came out. Its an odd size, its just slightly smaller than 4″ x 6″. I used some acetate to inlay the die cut pieces back into the panel.
It kinda looks like an odd card size looking at the photo above but I love it!

I love foiling and I’m testing out new techniques because I don’t want to always be taking my Minc or Laminator out…I just don’t have too much room to keep all my machines out (and I have quite a lot of machines).

My inspiration for floating die cut inlaying came from watching Catherine Poolers video on YouTube.

Card 4 Shaker Card using WRMK Fuse Tool + Video – Let’s Make Cards

There are a bunch of different tools out there in the crafting world, but one of my current favorites is the We R Memory Keepers Fuse Tool. Its awesome for making shaker cards, creating or dividing pockets for scrapbooks, lots of things.

In this card, I created a shaker pocket. I love how some of the sequins get stuck along the top of the shaker element – I just think it looks pretty.
Using the Fuse Tool eliminates the need for foam tape PLUS you can make it any shape you want! I just think its pretty awesome.

I wish I had the white ones because it would match my decor in my space a little better but I love having the fuse tool, no matter the color.

Card 3 Watercolor Emboss Resist + Video – Let’s Make Cards

Emboss resisting with watercolors are one of my most favorite techniques. Its almost like revealing a Christmas present when you add color.

I did four cards at once and its pretty much like having an assembly line. But its all unique because no two watercolor pieces (unless photicopied) will turn out the same.

This is one of my most favorite background stamp from Hero Arts. My Favorite Things is one of my favorite stamp companies to get sentiment stamps from. Their fonts are so classy and so simple that its the best.

Card 2 Foiling with Sticky Embossing Powder + Video – Let’s Make Cards

Foiling with Embossing Powder. love foiling and the effects foiling gives but I didn’t want to fuss with any glues and the mess with glues. So now I use Sticky Embossing Powder and I love it!

Just remember to make sure your melted embossing powder is cooled and for fine details, prevent using a bone folder or putting too much pressure down because it may spread and you won’t have the detail. Also, DO NOT run it through a lamintor or a minc machine, IT WILL SPREAD and won’t be pretty. Trust me, I have learned from experience.

Well here is Card 2. I love foiling, it gives a nice touch to anything. I also love shiny things (…like DIAMONDS!)

Card 1 Semi-flat Shaker Card + Video – Let’s Make Cards

Giveaways. Discounts. New series.

Maraiah Crystal Designs is starting a new card making series called Let’s Make Cards which will be (if nothing gets in the way) posted every week or maybe even more than once. So I’m kicking it off today with Card 1 – Semi-flat shaker card.

I love sparkly and shiney things so I thought I’d make a shaker card. I used a supper intricate die and the trick is to use some extra shims and dryer sheets but I didn’t, so I had to poke out the pieces that didn’t come out. Using a Bloom Tool that has a roller bristle end and attachments that can help removing the small pieces.

Every month, or every four/five cards, I will be doing a Crafty Things giveaway to subscribers on my blog and youtube, so don’t forget to subscribe and follow me on my blog, facebook, IG: @MaraiahCrystalDesigns, YouTube Channel
